McGillin’s Octoberfest
Although October is still more than a month away, McGillin’s is starting the celebration early. From now until Octoberfest, which is typically the sixteen days up to and including the first Sunday in October, they’ll serve seasonal beer selections along with German fare (think bratwurst) and a whole lot of fun. Expect a wide range of microbrews, along with well-known choices such as Stoudt’s Fest, Flying Fish’s Octoberphish, and Paulaner’s traditional Octoberfest beers. If you were waiting for a good reason to expand your beer repertoire, this is it. Through Sat., October 4, Monday through Saturday, 11am - 2am; Sundays, 11am - midnight, McGillin’s Olde Ale House, 1310 Drury St., 215.735.5562, www.mcgillins.com

Live Arts + Philly Fringe
Despite our love for the classics, we sometimes find the avant-garde side of art to be a bit more interesting. Beginning August 27, the 16-day Live Arts and Fringe Festival will feature performances from artists across the globe, depicting historical events, cultural movements, and scenes from classic literature in the most unconventional ways. You’ll find a choreographed dance inside a West Philly parking garage, a reinvention of juggling, and even an urban puppet show. It’s unfiltered, uncensored, and everything you ever wanted from art. Through Sat., Sept. 13, check website for specific times, dates, locations, and prices, 215.413.1318, www.pafringe.org

Liz Phair
Judging from the success of the Spice Girls’ summer tour, it seems we all enjoy displays of girl power. So when the guitar-wielding Liz Phair comes to the TLA on August 27, you can bet we’ll be there to indulge our inner rock goddess. With six successful albums under her belt, Phair has managed to maintain creative control of her music, while also climbing the Billboard charts. Expect to hear all of your old favorites, along with a bit of new material- we hear she has a new album in the works. Wed., Aug. 27, $25, 7pm, Theatre of the Living Arts, 334 South St., 215.922.1010, www.livenation.com
